8 Month Update

- How does time pass so quickly??  You are already 8 months old! You are a continuous source of joy in our lives and we are amazed at how easy you’re making our parenting job.

- You haven’t had a doctor’s appointment in a couple of months, but based on the bathroom scale, you’re about 19 pounds.

- You have 2 bottom teeth!

- Your hair has a lot of natural wave and highlights and is getting increasingly blonde.  You have been compared to “Syndrome”, Donald Trump, and Conan O’Brien. We hope you take the career path of Conan.

- You’re sitting up very well now, and you’re able to catch your balance if you start leaning.  We don’t want you to grow up too quickly, but we are thankful for the increased independence.  Having two hands while you’re sitting and playing with toys allows for so much more to get done.  However...

- You need one of us to be in your line of sight.  You don’t like the feeling of being alone while you’re playing. You’ve also begun showing a little bit of separation anxiety.  Every now and then, you’ll get a little sad when we leave you at daycare or in the church nursery.  Fortunately, it only lasts a few seconds and you’re back to your normal, playful self.  You’re also more wary of new faces and it takes a little longer to warm up to people you don’t see regularly.

- You’re very squirmy now, and it’s clear that you want to scoot or crawl.  You can’t do either, yet, which frustrates you.  But we know our days are numbered until you are mobile. You can, however, roll from place to place when you want something.

- You love to use your legs to bounce and stand with assistance.

- Your menu of solid foods is getting longer.  We’ve introduced chicken (mixed with sweet potatoes). Strawberries and Greek yogurt is a new favorite, but any fruit is always a hit.

- You have good control over your thumb and index finger, so picking up cheerios or finger foods and getting them to your mouth is a much more efficient task.

- You’re starting to show preferences when given choices.  When we’re taming your hair in the morning, you want to hold the comb, not the brush.  Different books get different reactions.  If we hand you something you’re not interested in, you’ll take it from us and immediately toss it aside.

- You’re also picking up on patterns and expect results from certain actions.  The other morning, one of your noise making toys ran out of batteries and you became frustrated that a sound wasn’t produced by hitting the button.   You know to look for Lexi at the top of the stairs when we get home.

- Your vocabulary consists of vowel sounds, guttural “dinosaur” sounds, lots of raspberries and spitting noises, and a version of singing.  Each of these is done with varying levels of intensity as you explore the concept of decibels.

- Your sleep patterns at night are so much better – usually 7:30pm-6:00am with a 10 minute feeding in the middle of the night.   And you do a great job of putting yourself to sleep now.  After a final feeding and reading a book, you hug your owl blanket and let us leave the room without complaint.  You gave up a pacifier months ago, but recently we’ve found you asleep sucking on the corner of your blanket or the foot of another stuffed animal. Just recently, you went 5 nights in a row without waking up, or at least without waking us up!

- You are such a sweet boy! We are having so much fun with you and can't wait to see what you will do in the coming month!

  1. The last picture is precious! How did you manage to get such a large bubble? I've been trying to capture a similar shot, but without success. My bubbles keep bursting.

  2. You have to blow very slowly and have a bit of luck. Then you have to hope that the little one isn't distracted by something else, like the click of a camera...

  3. Guys, Cohen looks so grown up!! With all that hair and teeth! Wow how fabulous. Lewis is not so hirsute nor as toothy!, but being baby#2 he is mobile now - and yes it makes life so much easier when he can shuffle to where he wants to go!
Rocky is off to NYC/Boston/Washington this month for business, so if you're in the neighbourhood........ let him know!
I wish Lewis and Cohen could have a play date!
